If you are like most of us, it has been a while since you have practiced math concepts!

**Try to solve the following example:**

- 8 + 16 – 4 ÷ 2

Did you get 10 as your answer? If you didn’t, congratulations! If you did, it’s okay.

You made a very common mistake most students make, given a problem like the one listed above.

The actual answer is listed at the bottom of this page.

The concept presented in the above example is called “The Order of Operations.”

Most students know the concept as PEMDAS.

At Ace Tutors Aboard; however, we use PEMA as a preferable mnemonic.

The first step is to complete any operations within PARENTHESES (P), then EXPONENTS (E), then MULTIPLICATION OR DIVISION, left to right (M), and, finally, ADDITION OR SUBTRACTION, left to right (A).

Using the above example, therefore, there are no parentheses or exponents.

So, we skip those steps. Then, we go to division (4 ÷ 2 = 2). Bring the other numbers down to read 8 + 16 – 2.

Next, using the A step, we solve 8 + 16 to get 24. Bring down the remaining number 2, which reads 24 – 2. Get 22. That’s your answer using the Order of Operations! Kind of looks like a V, doesn’t it!

8 + 16 – 4 ÷ 2

8 + 16 - 2

24 - 22

22

Just like the example listed above, any problem, regardless of the difficulty level, can be solved using easy-to-follow steps utilized by the in-home math tutors!

The actual answer is 22.
